“You also must be
ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” (Luke 12:40).
We must be ready for living out here and now a life fit for God’s kingdom. A life not totally
different from that of everybody else: with its challenges, trials, hardships,
tragic events, happy events…
And yet different in the sense that we go through
this life animated/informed by the kingdom values and under our King’s constant
care. So ready for life here and now. But ready for the great event which will
change everything.
We live here and now as “…we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great
God and Savior, Jesus Christ…” (Titus 2:13).
The glorious appearing/majestic arrival of our great
God and Saviour, Jesus.
Waiting can be and usually is a hard task…”Are we
there yet…?”
The Scripture puts a high price on “waiting”…
“Blessed is the man
who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For
whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD” (Proverbs 8:34, 35).
“Be still before
the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their
ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes” (Ps. 37:7).
Two things make waiting worthwhile: knowing what the
wait is for AND knowing that the waiting will be over.
Today’s Scripture begins with a one-sentence
parable. It seems that it is a parable about “waiting”…and to a
certain extent it is.
“…men waiting for their master to return from a
wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the
door for him” (Luke 12:36). These men are ready waiting…they are waiting
being ready.
There is a big reward in store for those who are waiting for their Master’s return (Luke 12:44). It is a reward worth waiting for!
