Peace on earth?

“Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division” (Luke 12:51). At times, when still, we can hear the “wind” bringing echoes of the angels’ song, “Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.” (Luke 2:14). The angels were heralding the Saviour born to us, the Lord (v.11). The One whom the prophet declared to be the Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6). Yet, Luke has Jesus on record saying, “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth?” (Luke 12:49). All those who were part of any Christmas Carols services or events could answer saying, “Yes that is what we think!” But Jesus went on to answer His rhetorical question, “No, I tell you, but division.” And He continued, “From now on…” There are times when certain “lines are being drawn” – lines that divide; lines that cut right through the middle of the most compact/cohesive entities. There are lines that divide families! (Luke 12:) There is a “line” which separates/divides for eternity: Jesus and Good News about Him. Some will hear, “Come…” others will hear “Go…” (Matthew 24:22-32). An eternal separation! The people living during Jesus’ ministry…witnessing His teachings, miracles, and healings failed to “read” their present time…failed to read “heaven”. They were “experts” in reading the earth and sky! (Luke 12:56). Today, we have advanced technology capable of accurately (more or less) predicting the weather. On the other hand, “heaven” is easy to read – following Jesus’ sacrifice, now is the time to settle things with our adversary (God) and make peace with Him. And Yes Jesus will bring worldwide and lasting peace at His return! Just you wait!  Pastor Alois
