Magnificat

“And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name” (Luke 1:46-49).

Mary’s soul was stirred to sing God’s praises. Her praises came out of the abundance of her joy and her words were the Spirit’s words.

These were words spoken by the Spirit before the world began;

-they were spoken by the Spirit over the years through different prophets and people of God (Psalms);

-they were spoken by the Spirit through Mary as she was overwhelmed by God’s grace in her life;

-they will be spoken by the Spirit through you and me every time we are brought to a point of recognition of God’s grace and mercies in our lives.

Mary proclaims God’s favour to her (vv.47-49).

What was the great thing God did for her? A pregnancy? A blessed name? Yes…but there is more.

God said, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15). The woman’s offspring will crush the serpent’s head. Who would be that woman?

For thousands of years nobody knew who that woman would be.

One day God called, “Gabriel, is time!” Off he went straight to Mary because heaven knew from the beginning of the world who that woman is.

Giving birth to the Saviour of the world? Yes.

The great thing that God did for Mary was working together with her to fulfil His ancient promise. See 1Corinthians 3:9. We are immersed in God’s grace every day and His favour is being shown to us every step we take. Let us rejoice in Him and proclaim His deeds. Let your spirit rejoice in Him!
