It is expedient

“But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (John 16:7). KJV: “It is expedient for you…”

Something becomes expedient if it results with a betterment of a condition.

“You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish” (John 11:50). Caiaphas’ intended meaning was correct. Humanly speaking it is expedient that one person dies instead of hundreds, or thousands, etc.

With Jesus out of the way, the Romans would spare the Jewish nation.

But John points out that Caiaphas’ words were taken as a prophecy, pointing to Jesus as the “sacrificial Lamb” who takes away the sins not only of the Jewish nation, but of the world, creating a people of God – united in Christ.

It was expedient for us that Jesus died on the cross.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” (2Timothy 3:16). All Scripture is expedient for those who open their hearts to consider its words.

Reading it, thinking about it, learning it may seem dry at moments. Nevertheless it is expedient: in teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. The Scripture is expedient for us because it brings a betterment of life…it makes one wise “unto salvation”.

Everything that comes to us from God is expedient for us…God has our betterment on His heart.

Jesus came from the Father – Saviour of the world and was received up in glory, seated on the throne at the Father’s right hand. He will come back.

The angels said, “This same Jesus whom you see being taken into heaven, will “come back the same way”. And His coming back will be, at the same time, the vindication of their preaching AND answer to their prayer.

What is the Church’ prayer, again? “Come Lord Jesus….!”
